far I have not found that elusive "missing link" that will
recognise any of the names that follow please contact me,
recognise anyone below, please still contact me because
Everyone has an impossible dream. Mine is to contact as many Maunder descendants as possible right round the world and try to link them all to the one common ancestor. So far, until I can find his father, that common ancestor is Thomas Mawndre, born about 1400 in Devonshire, England. Thomas lived at Templeton Devonshire. Whether or not he was born there, I don't know.
I am trying to compile the Worldwide Maunder Family by trying to include all the members of families with, or descended from people with, the surname MAUNDER, no matter when they are living now, worldwide. Although my assumption is most likely incorrect, I would like to believe that we are all descended from one common unknown ancestor. I believe also that this mystery person was living somewhere in Devonshire, England, prior to the year 1350.
So far, from help given by family members in various countries, I have been able to start a family line which, for want of a better name, I have called The Main Family Line.
In my searching, I have also been given over seventy Maunder family listings which, so far, I have not been able to connect into The Main Family Line. I feel sure that all of these people will eventually be included somewhere in my main listing.
If you are a Maunder family member can you please help? Maybe you can supply a "new" family line - or perhaps you can recognise someone in these lists.
Whatever the case, if you are a Maunder family member, please contact me.
Eighty five thousand cousins later...
To make the job even harder, there are several variations of the spelling of our surname. When I started down the rocky road of genealogy, I decided that unless the surname was spelt as "Maunder" - and nothing else - I would ignore it. I soon discovered that this would eventually exclude many thousands of cousins. Spelling variations so far discovered are: Mander, Maunder, Maunders, Mawnder, Mawndre and Monder - probably more to come! I must say at this point, however, that since accepting these variations I have received emails telling me that the (Mander, Manders etc) name originated in France – or Germany – or Holland – even Morocco! Maybe one of those variations does match the spelling of a non-English family name. Before we venture onwards, please note that this website refers only the descendants (or probable descendants after a link is made) of ROGER MAUNDER who was born about 1335 in Devon, England.
Our surname appears to date back to about the time that surnames were first adopted in "Maunder Territory" - Devonshire, England. There are at least five opinions as to its origin:
Who can say? Maybe one of the above possibilities is even the correct one. Whatever the case, the last option above appears to be the popular choice.
It was once suggested to me that people with our surname are mentioned in the Domesday Book. The Domesday (or Doomsday) Book was written about eight hundred years ago, and was a record of all the landholders in England. I have searched through a copy of the Domesday Book, which contains thousands of names, and have been unable to find any mention of the surname "Maunder", "Mander" or "Mawndre".
Also mentioned by correspondents was the idea that there exists a Maunder Crest and that the family motto is either "Live Well" or "Enjoy Life". Four different crests have been shown or described to me. You probably would have already seen two of these crests elsewhere on this site. I also visited firms who specialise in tracing crests etc., but they were unable to help me, so which of the crests is the correct one I cannot say.
One of the family lines for which I have been able to gather the most information (because it's the one I am in) starts with NICHOLAS MAUNDER. My thanks to Peter Maunder, of Devon England, and others for their help with this line. There is evidence of two wills, one proved in 1565 by Julian Mawnder and the other in 1566 by George Maunder. It is believed that one of these two men was the father or grandfather of Nicholas Maunder. In a survey which was taken in 1596 of the manors of East and West Stoodleigh, in Devonshire, England, it was noted that Nicholas Maunder, aged 53, was allowed tenancy on 2nd July 1564 of a tenement in the manor of West Stoodleigh called the East-most Cottage.
The earliest known Maunder who has been identified is ROGER MAUNDER who was born about 1335 in Devon, England. I've been told that surnames as we know them did not come into widespread use in that particular part of England until about this time. This prompts me to guess that perhaps an earlier person with the surname of Maunder (or Mawndre) is unlikely ever to be discovered. Roger is mentioned in a Cruwys family estate document dated 1368. Roger's son, RICHARD MAUNDER, was born about 1370 and was granted the lease of Filnap and Noteslade at Cruwys Morchard, Devon, by John Cruwys in 1415.
